Comparing a replacement

Photograph the existing part from the front and side. Note its overall size and the position of each opening or mounting point. For a wheel assembly, include a side view of the groove and a view of the bracket feet so both profiles can be compared.

Choosing a decorative pattern

View the pattern at the scale of the whole opening. Compare the spacing of the motifs and how the edges meet a frame or adjoining panel. On paired gate leaves, look at how the pattern meets at the centre when both leaves close.
